For this month’s edition of Pluxeeventures, we head to Iloilo—a UNESCO City of Creative Gastronomy known for its heritage landmarks, vibrant traditions, and inventive local culture. Here, history and modern life blend seamlessly, offering visitors plenty to explore.

What makes Iloilo even more fascinating is the influence of women throughout its past and present. From historical figures to artisans and entrepreneurs, women have significantly shaped the city’s identity.

Whether you are exploring heritage sites, discovering local crafts, or tasting Ilonggo delicacies, Iloilo offers experiences that go beyond the usual travel itinerary.

Must-visit historical sites

Start your trip at Molo Church, often known as the “Feminist Church”. Built in the late 1800s, it is known for its interior featuring an all-female lineup of saints—a detail that reflects the community’s recognition of women.

Iloilo’s history is also linked to Teresa Magbanua, known as the Joan of Arc of the Visayas. Hailing from the town of Pototan, she was among the few women who led the armed resistance during the two Philippine Revolution, leaving a legacy of courage. To this day, women continue to hold several key leadership positions in Iloilo, both in local government and in private sectors.

Hidden gems

Beyond its landmarks, Iloilo’s heritage houses reveal how architecture and gastronomy intertwine. Stewarded by matriarchs and sustained by generations of women, these ancestral homes offer a deeper taste of living heritage—where curated history sits alongside flavors that celebrate the city’s evolving culinary identity.

One such gem is Camina Balay na Bato in Villa Arevalo, an ancestral house where guests are welcomed with Ilonggo hospitality through rich, traditional tsokolate paired with local biscuits—a simple yet soulful ritual that connects food with memory.

Another stop—the Agatona 1927 Museum Café — named after the Jalandoni family matriarch, breathes new life into a restored heritage home, now serving both as a café and cultural space.

Unique experiences in Iloilo

Iloilo is also known for hablon, a handwoven local textile made using wooden looms. Many of the artisans continuing this tradition today are women who have learned the craft from earlier generations.

Groups like the Salngan Livelihood Multi-Purpose Cooperative, Indag-an Primary Multi-Purpose Cooperative, and Miag-ao Weavers Association help sustain these weaving communities and preserve the tradition.

You can also shop modern interpretations of hablon through artisan shops like Balai Hablon, Tinukib Cafe and Souvenirs, and Modern Ilongga
